New Years 2008 Highlights

The excitement of a live New Year's show is the unexpected. Knowing that it is impossible to attend every New Year's Eve Show, here are what I would consider highlights from 12/31/08 shows.

My Morning Jacket played Madison Square Garden and played a couple of fun covers: The Wanderer by Dion and the Belmonts, Islands in the Sea by Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers

The Disco Biscuits played The Nokia Theatre and were joined by everyone's favorite Rasta Jew Matisyahu for Magellan.

The North Mississippi Allstars played the Orpheum in Tennessee and played All Night Long ->Lovelight -> All Night Long.

Tea Leaf Green decided to cover some Beatles tunes: The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Yes, I know that Phil, Ratdog, Panic and others are notably missing. They may have played great shows, even Phil, Bobby & Jon's "Work in Progress" set was a typical set list, and this post was for the things that make NYE unique.

OK, so I have three kids and refuse to listen to Barney all the time and I am constantly looking for music that will satisfy all in the car. The kids loved the Underdog movie and the opening theme is short but rocks (at least as much as an Underdog Theme song can rock). Much to my dismay I have been unable to find the song, which I believe is the Plain White T's Underdog Rock , at least that's what IMDB has led me to believe. So I pulled it from the movie and I am sharing it with you. Not the usual fare for this blog, but important none the less.

Cover of the Month - Hey Jude

I am obsessed with the data that Last.FM provides me. I am using it to broaden my musical experiences (more on that at another time) and it helps me to come up with ideas for my blog.

Reviewing my recently played list I remember listening to "Hey Jude" in the car and really jammin' to it. Of all the Beatles songs, Jude isn't in my top 20, but on the occasions that it catches you right it is real treat.

I know Jude has been covered by plenty of bands, so I sent out on a search to find them ALL, or at least musicians that remotely sound familiar.

Hey Jude made an appearance in Jamaica when The Brain Damaged Eggmen (Members of the Disco Biscuits & Umphrey's Mcgee) covered it on December 16, 2007 in Jamaica. Unfortunately this cover is completely forgettable and uninspired. This show also has other Beatles covers as well as Pink Floyd stuff.
Hey Jude is part of Strangefolk's set list from August 10, 1996
After not playing Hey Jude for 20 years The Grateful Dead brought it back on March 22, 1990. Typically they played the final chorus of Jude which flowed beautifully from, most times, a Dear Mr. Fantasy. In this show they play Hey Jude->Dear Mr. Fantasy->Hey Jude Refrain.

iGoogle Theme Submitted

I've been using iGoogle as my home page for about a year ago. When I first began I checked out the Themes and wasn't too impressed. I checked again recently and found some interesting themes, but none related to music or jam bands, so I made my own.

If you use iGoogle make sure your logged in and then visit my first theme.

I submitted it this morning (5/19/08) so I await word from the GOOGLE GODS if it meets their standards.

I have seen quite a few live performances in my life, and the question that seems to surface when discussing live music is "What's your favorite show?"

For me, my favorite show is one that I attended to and still listen to regularly - The Black Crowes live in Tampa on April 7, 1995 when they opened for the Grateful Dead. Read the Reviews from Crowesbase.com.

I recently purchased moe.'s new ablum - Sticks & Stones. After a couple of listens I was not too impressed - overall 3.5/5. Check out Rolling Stone's Review or All Music's Review.

After reading the AllMusic review on TocoSongs I thought to myself, "moe. is a LIVE band. I wonder what these songs sound like LIVE? "

LastFM or Pandora?

I was turned onto Pandora about six months ago by a co-worker who was so excited about creating a Dave only station. I began using Pandora and thought it was great - it surely beat the pants off any radio station I could find. As time went by I stumbled onto Pandora's Jar which led me to LastFM.

After this discovery I found myself in a quandary - which one do I listen to? I read posts about this at Steve Krause's blog, David Porter's Blog and at TechCrunch. The insights offered allowed me to have a better understanding of the services; however, I still I didn't know which one was right for me.

I decided that the best way to do this was to let both services play 12 tracks for me based on similar data. Using the LastFM data from my profile I created a Pandora station that used my top 10 bands and top 10 songs as I foundation. I also decided to throw in my iTunes Party Shuffle to help see my tastes and the accuracy of the other services.

After reviewing this, my decision is that if you want more of what you currently listening to then LastFM is your place; if you want NEW MUSIC with a foundation in your current musical tastes Pandora is the ticket. If you don't want any real surprises, stay with your iTunes.

Surfjan Stevens - A Free Man in Paris

Today's track came to me in a most unusual method. I was folding laundry and decided to turn on one of the music channels from Verizon. I found a channel that seemed interesting enough and set to folding socks and hanging shirts when a chorus of horns called to me from the television.

Well, to my surprise was the name of a man, band, woman.... who knew who or what a Surfjan Stevens is - sounds a bit like a bad Beach Boys song but who am I since I refer to myself as Jammin' Junkie...

The song "A Free Man in Paris" was playing through my TV and just caught me. This was wonderful - new music, new musician - I was excited!

Scarlet Begonias for Everyone

Wow - 2 days in a row! This may not happen often, but being new to the blog-o-sphere I couldn't help myself.

When I first visualized this blog I thought it would be nice and easy... I thought. It occurred to me that there are thousands of other blogs out there and re-creating what was already done was just plain silly. So, I now have to take my time and research to make sure that what I decide to blog is a different take on the same point.

For instance, I thought today's blog would be a whole bit about Foamfoot, a cover band made up of Chris Robinson & Marc Ford from the Black Crowes, Jimmy Ashurst of The JuJu Hounds, Eric Bobo from Cypress Hill and Gary Louris of The Jayhawks. This show is just great Rock 'n Roll.... and then I discovered Aquariumdrunkard.com. If Foamfoot is new to you definitely check out the Aquarium's posts on the topic here.

OK - so on to today's point. Once I discovered Foamfoot would be redundant I ended up thinking about yesterday's post which led me to Jimmy Buffet and covers which led to Jimmy's cover of the Dead's Scarlet Begonias which led to Sublime's version which begged the question: Who else has covered Scarlet Begonias?

With a bit of time I was surprised that this was not covered as much as I intended. I Googled "Scarlet Begonias cover" and found the two mentioned above. I then searched archive.org and found Keller Williams, Max Creek, Phish and The Big Wu.

Keller & Phish were no surprise, but always worth the time especially if you love your Begonias. Max Creek, clocking in at over 16 minutes, is a great find and I encourage you to listen to an old friend with new ears. The Wu is nice, but not lighting my world on fire.

If you know of other Begonia covers out there let me know as I would love to hear them. If I can I will also add them to the playlist and if possible link to the mp3.

A Resurfacing

Over the past 8 years I have attempted to be a presence in the live music world starting with EACing the Black Crowes Live @ The Joint and then FTPing it to some friendly trader and later serving that same file up on DirectConnect. Later I found myself creating CD cover art and using free websites to host and share the completed work.

A wife, three children, and a career later my love for music and desire to contribute to the community still exists; however, my focus has shifted. My days no longer allow me the opportunity to listen to complete concerts day in and day out so I now keep my ears and eyes out for lightning in a bottle, unique covers, brilliant song combinations and the ever elusive studio track that makes me say "whoa - what was that?" This blog will focus on those songs in addition to any other music I feel obligated to comment on.

So, here is my first offering to the internet. I often search bt.etree.org in search of something unique and I was drawn to Jack Johnson's Kokua Festival torrent.

I can dig on Jack occassionaly, especially if I'm drivin' on one of those beautiful west-central Florida afternoons with the perfect combination of warmth and wind... I digress.

Anyway what caught my attention about the Kokua setlist was "A Pirate Looks at 40". Turns out this was the encore from the Dave & Tim set and well, I had to to listen. I was not disappointed as it is just as much fun as the original with the right emphasis in the right places.
