Knowing that it is impossible to attend every New Year's Eve Show, here are what I would consider highlights from 12/31/08 shows.<div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2008-12-31" target="blank">My Morning Jacket played Madison Square Garden</a> and played a couple of fun covers:<a href="http://www.archive.org/download/mmj2008-12-31/mmj2008-12-31s1t21_vbr.mp3" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration: none;"> </span></a><a href="http://www.archive.org/download/mmj2008-12-31/mmj2008-12-31s1t21_vbr.mp3">The Wanderer by Dion and the Belmonts, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); "></span></a><a href="http://www.archive.org/download/mmj2008-12-31/mmj2008-12-31s2t07_vbr.mp3">Islands in the Sea by Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers</a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://www.archive.org/details/db2008-12-31.mk4.flac16%22" target="blank">The Disco Biscuits played The Nokia Theatre</a> and were joined by everyone's favorite Rasta Jew Matisyahu for <a href="http://www.archive.org/download/db2008-12-31.mk4.flac16/db2008-12-31.mk4.d3t05_vbr.mp3" target="blank">Magellan</a>.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.archive.org/details/nma2008-12-31.schoepsCCM-L.flac16" target="blnak">The North Mississippi Allstars played the Orpheum in Tennessee</a> and played <a href="http://www.archive.org/download/nma2008-12-31.schoepsCCM-L.flac16/NMAS123108d1t09_vbr.mp3" target="blank">All Night Long ->Lovelight -> All Night Long.</a></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.archive.org/details/tlg2008-12-31.flac16" target="blank">Tea Leaf Green</a> decided to cover some Beatles tunes: <a href="http://www.archive.org/download/tlg2008-12-31.flac16/tlg2008-12-31d2t04_vbr.mp3">The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill </a>and <a href="http://www.archive.org/download/tlg2008-12-31.flac16/tlg2008-12-31d2t05_vbr.mp3" target="blank">While My Guitar Gently Weeps.</a> </div><div><br /></div><div>Yes, I know that Phil, Ratdog, Panic and others are notably missing. The kids loved the Underdog movie and the opening theme is short but rocks (at least as much as an Underdog Theme song can rock). Much to my dismay I have been unable to find the song, which I believe is the Plain White T's <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?d00zyjgjhln" target="new"><span style="font-style:italic;" target="new">Underdog Rock </span></a>, at least that's what <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0467110/soundtrack" target="new">IMDB</a> has led me to believe. So I pulled it from the movie and I am sharing it with you. Not the usual fare for this blog, but important none the less.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?d00zyjgjhln" target="new">Underdog Rock, for you....</a>jamminjunkiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00633752291778408891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2570753916380724474.post-52416345836989528282008-12-14T20:00:00.005-05:002008-12-14T20:11:01.553-05:00Black Crowes cover Cold Rain & SnowCame across this while cruising <a href="http://bt.etree.org/" target="blank"><img src="http://bt.etree.org/pic/logo.gif" width="75" height="37.5" /></a>and thought I would share.<br /><br /><center><img src="http://www.livedownloads.com/images/shows/tbc1001_01.jpg" /> </center><br /><br />Here is The Black Crowes cover of <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?yh5kofmdlgz" target="blank">Cold Rain & Snow </a>from November 21, 2008. I am using it to broaden my musical experiences (more on that at another time) and it helps me to come up with ideas for my blog.<br /><br />Reviewing my recently played list I remember listening to "Hey Jude" in the car and really <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">jammin</span>' to it. Of all the Beatles songs, Jude isn't in my top 20, but on the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">occasions</span> that it catches you right it is real treat.<br /><br />I know Jude has been covered by plenty of bands, so I sent out on a search to find them ALL, or at least musicians that remotely sound familiar.<br /><br />So here they are: <ul><li style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="http://www.archive.org/download/dtb2008-04-12.flac16/dtb2008-04-12d2t05_vbr.mp3">Hey Jude</a> was covered by Derek Trucks & Susan <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Tedeschi</span> Soul Stew Revival at the <a href="http://www.archive.org/details/dtb2008-04-12.flac16" target="blank"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Wanee</span> Festival on April 12, 2008</a> LISTEN TO THIS!!!!</span></li><li><a href="http://68.40.206.138/Music/Temp/Across%20the%20Universe%20Soundtrack/Across%20the%20Universe%20Soundtrack/Across%20The%20Universe%20Soundtrack/2-13%20Hey%20Jude.mp3">Hey Jude</a> - From the <u>Across the Universe</u> soundtrack, <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">performed</span> by Joe Anderson</li><li><a href="http://junkieblog.googlepages.com/02HeyJude.mp3">Hey Jude</a> - From Wilson Pickett's Album <u>Hey Jude</u> with Duane <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Allman</span>. I began using Pandora and thought it was great - it surely beat the pants off any radio station I could find. As time went by I stumbled onto <a href="http://lifehacker.com/software/pandora/download-of-the-day-pandoras-jar-windows-219114.php" target="_blank">Pandora's Jar</a> which led me to <a href="http://www.last.fm/" target="_blank">LastFM</a>.<br /><br />After this discovery I found myself in a quandary - which one do I listen to? I read posts about this at <a href="http://www.stevekrause.org/steve_krause_blog/2006/01/pandora_and_las.html" target="_blank">Steve Krause's blog</a>, <a href="http://davidporter.wordpress.com/2006/01/25/6/" target="_blank">David Porter's Blog</a> and at <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/01/23/655/" target="_blank">TechCrunch</a>. The insights offered allowed me to have a better understanding of the services; however, I still I didn't know which one was right for me.<br /><br />I decided that the best way to do this was to let both services play 12 tracks for me based on similar data. Using the <a href="http://www.last.fm/user/jamminjunkie/" target="_blank">LastFM data from my profile</a> I created a Pandora station that used my top 10 bands and top 10 songs as I foundation. I also decided to throw in my iTunes Party Shuffle to help see my tastes and the accuracy of the other services.<br /><table><tbody><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66"><center>Last FM</center></td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb"><center>Pandora</center></td><td bgcolor="#66cc66"><center>iTunes Shuffle</center></td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Goin' Down South - North Mississippi Allstars</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Carl Perkins' Cadillac - Drive-By Truckers</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Barstools & Dreamers - Widespread Panic</td><br /></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Passenger - Grateful Dead</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">4th of July - Robert Earl Keen</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">McBain - moe.</td></tr><tr><br /><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Powdered Water Too - Eyedea & Abilities</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">I'd Call to Say I Love You - The Hangdogs </td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Midnight Hour - Phil & Friends w/Trey</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Via Chicago - Wilco</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Get Drunk - Drag the River</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Onslaught - Blues Traveler</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Euphoria - Leftover Salmon</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Tangerine - Big Head Todd & The Monsters</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">One Mirror Too Many - Black Crowes</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Comin' Back - The Crystal Method<br /></td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Heavy - Black Crowes</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Trance Mission - Izzy Stradlin</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Weekapaug Groove - Phish<br /></td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Diamonds on the Inside - Ben Harper</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">The Ocean - Led Zepplin</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Sleep On - Alison Krauss</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Soak the Skin - Blind Melon</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Three or Four - The New Pornographers</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Hey 19 - Steely Dan</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Down South - Tom Petty</td></tr><tr><br /><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Kill Ya Momz - Sage Francis</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Get a Leg Up - John Mellencamp</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Come Together - Rat Dog</td></tr><tr> <td bgcolor="#66cc66">Outta Shape - Gov't Mule</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">It'll Come Around - Back Door Slam</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Doggy Dogg World - Snoop Dogg</td> </tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Weight of the World - Widespread Panic</td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb">Hang on Loosely - .38 Special</td><td bgcolor="#66cc66">Gemorrah - Jerry Garica</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor="#66cc66"><ul><li>4 Songs I knew<br /></li><li>9 Bands I had heard of before</li><li>3 NEW Bands</li><li>1 track I might listen to again (Crystal Method)</li><li>1 I will NEVER listen to again (Sage)</li></ul></td><td bgcolor="#bbbbbb"><ul><li>8 Songs I knew</li><li>8 Bands I had heard of</li><li>4 NEW Bands</li><li>1 I might listen to again (Back Door Slam)</li><li>1 I HATE (.38 Special)</li></ul></td><td bgcolor="#66cc66"><ul><li>11 songs I knew</li><li>1 I am not fond of (Trance Mission)</li><li>nothing new</li></ul></td></tr></tbody></table>After reviewing this, my decision is that if you want more of what you currently listening to then LastFM is your place; if you want NEW MUSIC with a foundation in your current musical tastes Pandora is the ticket. I was folding laundry and decided to turn on one of the music channels from Verizon. I found a channel that seemed interesting enough and set to folding socks and hanging shirts when a chorus of horns called to me from the television.<br /><br />Well, to my surprise was the name of a man, band, woman.... who knew who or what a Surfjan Stevens is - sounds a bit like a bad Beach Boys song but who am I since I refer to myself as Jammin' Junkie...<br /><br />The song "A Free Man in Paris" was playing through my TV and just caught me. This was wonderful - new music, new musician - I was excited!<br /><br />Take a listen to "A Free Man in Paris" by Surfjan Stevens, who is a apparently one person with a unique name, from the album <span style="font-style: italic;">A Tribute to Joanie Mitchell</span>.<br /><br />Have you ever been turned onto a song in an odd way? Just curious where else I can find jems.<br /><br /><a style="left: 0px ! important; top: 0px ! important;" title="Click here to block this object with Adblock Plus" class="abp-objtab-003896908935908461 visible ontop" href="http://www.google.com/reader/ui/3247397568-audio-player.swf?audioUrl=http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/fmip.mp3"></a><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.google.com/reader/ui/3247397568-audio-player.swf?audioUrl=http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/fmip.mp3" allowscriptaccess="never" quality="best" bgcolor="#ffffff" wmode="window" flashvars="playerMode=embedded" height="27" width="400"></embed>jamminjunkiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00633752291778408891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2570753916380724474.post-61065161513279293372008-04-28T22:09:00.008-04:002008-05-24T13:13:57.185-04:00Scarlet Begonias for EveryoneWow - 2 days in a row! This may not happen often, but being new to the blog-o-sphere I couldn't help myself.<br /><br />When I first visualized this blog I thought it would be nice and easy... I thought. It occurred to me that there are thousands of other blogs out there and re-creating what was already done was just plain silly. So, I now have to take my time and research to make sure that what I decide to blog is a different take on the same point.<br /><br />For instance, I thought today's blog would be a whole bit about Foamfoot, a cover band made up of Chris Robinson & Marc Ford from the Black Crowes, <span class="NonSerifText">Jimmy Ashurst of The JuJu Hounds, Eric Bobo from Cypress Hill and Gary Louris of The Jayhawks. This show is just great Rock 'n Roll.... and then I discovered Aquariumdrunkard.com. If Foamfoot is new to you definitely check out the Aquarium's posts on the topic <a href="http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/2007/08/20/foamfoot-live-the-troubadour-1-8-94/" target=blank>here</a>.<br /><br />OK - so on to today's point. Once I discovered Foamfoot would be redundant I ended up thinking about yesterday's post which led me to Jimmy Buffet and covers which led to Jimmy's cover of the Dead's Scarlet Begonias which led to Sublime's version which begged the question: Who else has covered Scarlet Begonias?<br /><br />With a bit of time I was surprised that this was not covered as much as I intended. I Googled "Scarlet Begonias cover" and found the two mentioned above. I then searched <a href="http://www.archive.org/details/etree">archive.org</a> and found Keller Williams, Max Creek, Phish and The Big Wu.<br /><br /><a style="left: 0px ! important; top: 33px ! important;" title="Click here to block this object with Adblock Plus" class="abp-objtab-038304506196092714 visible ontop" href="http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/xspf_player.swf?playlist_url=http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/begonialist.xspf"></a><a style="left: 0px ! important; top: 33px ! important;" title="Click here to block this object with Adblock Plus" class="abp-objtab-038304506196092714 visible ontop" href="http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/xspf_player.swf?playlist_url=http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/begonialist.xspf"></a><a style="left: 0px ! important; top: 33px ! important;" title="Click here to block this object with Adblock Plus" class="abp-objtab-038304506196092714 visible ontop" href="http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/xspf_player.swf?playlist_url=http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/begonialist.xspf"></a><a style="left: 0px ! important; top: 33px ! important;" title="Click here to block this object with Adblock Plus" class="abp-objtab-038304506196092714 visible ontop" href="http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/xspf_player.swf?playlist_url=http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/begonialist.xspf"></a><object codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" standby="Player is loading ..." classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" height="160" width="400"><br /><embed src="http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/xspf_player.swf?playlist_url=http://jamminjunkie.googlepages.com/begonialist.xspf" quality="high" bgcolor="#E2E2E2" name="xspf_player" allowscriptaccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" align="middle" height="160" width="400"></embed><br /><br /></object><br /></span><span class="NonSerifText">Keller & Phish were no surprise, but always worth the time especially if you love your Begonias.
